Our First Day

Hello Everyone, sorry I didn’t get back here yesterday, but it was a big day for Max and I.  I have to say I was beyond surprised by what I saw when the vet tech brought Max out.  She put him on the floor and he walked/hopped right over to me and headed directly for the door!!!  Not what I expected…I was certain he was going to be groggy and out of it and I did not expect him to be able/willing to walk around.  I was thrilled.

Then there was the ride home…a little difficult for both of us to figure out but eventually he found a comfortable spot.  And finally HOME!   I took him directly to the fire hydrant but he was not interested at ALL.

I brought him to the small area I setup for, put him in his bed, and there he stayed for about 10 seconds!  He hopped over to where I was and tried to climb in my lap…and that’s how the day went.  He has a VERY NORMAL appetite he looks great…BUT…he has not urinated since he’s been home.  I have taken him several time outside to several different “hot” spots and nothing.  I have a pad down for him but he is not using that either.  Is this normal?  I’m hoping that at some point today he’s going to get to his business.

Oh and Mary…I’m home ring my bell or give me a shout.

Lisa & Max

    Hi Lisa,

First of all, this all sounds great and very much like what many folks here report. It seems that the rear amps bounce along nicely right after surgery, and we’ll all cross our paws that he keeps on like this. If he doesn’t, that’s also normal. Remember: Normal takes many forms from now on.

As for peeing, I think Dakota was home about 30 or 32 hours before he finally agreed to bless me with urinating. I was begging him, pleading with him, etc. I even called the hospital and had an informal arrangement to return him for a catheter, but I was so dreading that. He finally took pity on me and peed like a racehorse. And yes, everyone here celebrated with goodies once he let loose.

Welcome to your new normal, Lisa! It’ll always surprise you!

    Shari
